The MORPHEUS microscope can be configured as a glovebox-ready robotic microscope. Each mechanical and electronic component of the microscope is controlled via USB interface through hermetically sealed feedthroughs. Robust mechanical assemblies position specimens under the microscope objective lenses while a digital color camera captures high resolution images suitable for archival and publication. Complete control over XY stage, microscope focus, magnification, high contrast Koehler illumination, and video camera acquisition is accomplished from a Windows environment. A current generation personal computer loaded with proprietary robotic control software serves as operator interface yielding a comfortable and ergonomic environment in which to work.

The software is easily customized to perform complex operations such as automated image acquisition for a predefined area. Area of interest can be expanded by stitching multiple fields of view into a larger composite image. While this method yields fields of view similar to a typical macroscope/zoom microscope, resolution is much greater. Depth of focus can also be expanded by stitching multiple focal planes into a sharper composite image. This image processing technique generates focal depths typically produced by low f-stop settings on conventional cameras.

In addition, as full control of the robotics is accomplished via computer interface, remote control of the robot from another room, building, or country is made easy with proprietary remote desktop software. Any standard internet connection will facilitate this type of operation.
